A territory of hamlets

The municipal statute, approved in 2000 and last amended in 2012, notes that Alessandria's territory includes many hamlets (frazioni) and settlements; for this reason the municipality divides it into areas (ambiti), whose number and boundaries are set by the City Council. When the statute was adopted there were five: Alessandria Sud, Alessandria Nord, Centro, Europista and Fraschetta. The municipal district councils (circoscrizioni) were abolished from the first renewal of the Council after 1 January 2011.

Coat of arms and banner

The statute describes the city's coat of arms as a red cross on a silver field, surrounded by an oak branch and a laurel branch and topped by the city crown. The banner (gonfalone) is a white cloth with a red cross, edged in red, bearing the motto "Deprimit elatos levat Alexandria stratos".
