Climate: Adriatic, summer heat, dry riverbeds
Adriatic Mediterranean climate: mild windy winters, long hot humid summers, rain concentrated from October to March. The Scirocco brings heat peaks; heavy autumn rain can flood the areas crossed by the lame (dry riverbeds). Air quality is average: few days above the PM10 limit.

The climate in short
Bari has a Mediterranean climate with Adriatic influence: mild winters with occasional cold outbreaks from the north-east (Tramontana and Bora) that bring temperatures close to zero and, rarely, snow; hot humid summers, where the sea breeze softens afternoon heat on the seafront but not in the inland districts. Rain is concentrated between October and March; summer is almost dry.
Heat, Scirocco and dry riverbeds
The Scirocco, a hot south-easterly wind, pushes temperatures well above 35 °C during summer heatwaves and brings muggy nights; intense heat days have increased in recent decades, as elsewhere in the South. The municipal territory is crossed by lame, ancient torrent beds now dry that refill during very heavy rain: flooding of roads and underpasses around Lama Balice, Lama Lamasinata and in the Japigia district is a known risk, monitored by the municipal civil protection service.
Water and air
Water comes from the Acquedotto Pugliese, which feeds the city from springs and reservoirs in Campania and Basilicata: Apulia lacks sufficient water resources of its own, and in drought years restrictions hit agriculture before household use. Air quality is average for Italian cities: exceedances of the daily PM10 limit are few and mainly linked to Saharan dust episodes and traffic (see data).
