Housing
Bari is cheaper than the big Centre-North cities above all for housing: OMI quotations for central zones remain below Rome, Milan, Florence and Bologna. In recent years, however, the centre (Murat, old town, seafront) has seen sustained growth in rents and prices, driven by tourism and the conversion of flats into short-term lets; Libertà, Madonnella and the inland districts remain more affordable.
Groceries, transport, car
Eating out and food shopping cost less than in the North: street food (focaccia, panzerotti) and neighbourhood trattorias are cheap, while seafront and old-town restaurants charge tourist-city prices. The monthly AMTAB pass is among the cheapest of the regional capitals, and over the years the Comune has promoted discounted annual passes (MUVT programme). Those living in the former villages or in the province depend on a car, with the related fuel and parking costs.
