What people eat
Bari's cooking is street and sea food: focaccia with cherry tomatoes and olives, fried panzerotti, sgagliozze (fried polenta) and popizze, orecchiette with turnip tops (fresh ones are bought at Arco Basso in the old town), rice, potatoes and mussels (tiella), and raw seafood (sea urchins, curled octopus, mussels) sold by fishermen at N'derr'a la lanze, the San Nicola pier. A recent but now emblematic city dish is spaghetti all'assassina, charred in the pan with tomato and chilli. The house wines are Primitivo and Negroamaro, from the neighbouring provinces.
- Nazario Sauro and Araldo di Crollalanza seafront: walking, running, sunsets over the harbour; free.
- Pane e Pomodoro and Torre Quetta: free equipped beaches south of the centre, city buses.
- Parco 2 Giugno (Carrassi) and Lama Balice (nature park to the north-west): green space and trails.
- Fish market at the San Nicola pier and the Santa Scolastica market in the old town.
- Teatro Petruzzelli (opera, concerts) and Teatro Piccinni (drama); the metropolitan art gallery on the seafront.
- San Nicola stadium (Renzo Piano, 1990): SSC Bari matches.
Evenings and sport
Nightlife is concentrated in the old town (Piazza Mercantile, Piazza del Ferrarese, Via Venezia on the walls), in Murat and in the Umbertino district around Largo Adua and Via Cognetti, with bars and cocktail bars; Libertà and Madonnella have a more alternative scene. Sports people find sailing, rowing and swimming at the seafront clubs, municipal pitches and gyms in the districts, and cycle routes along the coast to Torre a Mare and Santo Spirito.
