Sectors
The main employer is the public sector: the Apulia Region, the Metropolitan City, the Comune, state offices, courts, the two universities and health care (Policlinico, hospitals, ASL). The port and inland freight terminal feed logistics, shipping and maritime services; retail and catering grow with tourism. The Bari–Modugno industrial area hosts automotive-component and aerospace plants (among others Bosch, GE Aerospace's Avio Aero and Marelli) and a significant part of the Apulian aerospace technology district's supply chain is in Bari. ICT and software have grown over the past ten years with offices of national companies and start-ups; agri-food matters mainly in the province.
Trade fair, coworking, employment services
The Fiera del Levante, in September, is the South's historic general trade fair and hosts specialised fairs through the year; the exhibition grounds on the western seafront also house events and regional offices. The Bari Chamber of Commerce publishes data on businesses in the metropolitan city. Coworking spaces are found mainly in Murat and Libertà; the Comune runs Porta Futuro, a public job-guidance and matching service. The skilled job market is smaller than in the North and employment rates remain below the national average (see data).
