Cost of living: housing weighs heavily, the rest is average

Rents among the highest in Italy after Milan, driven by student and worker demand; single rooms are expensive and contested. Transport, groceries and dining at northern averages, with a popular cuisine still affordable. Cheaper districts beyond the station and in bus-served outskirts.

Housing

What sets Bologna apart is rent: with a university of tens of thousands of students, a job market that draws from all over Italy and a small historic centre, rents have risen more than elsewhere and single rooms in the centre and the university area are hard to find between August and October. The municipality runs a metropolitan rental agency and promotes agreed-rent contracts, which here benefit both parties through tax discounts. Buying costs less than in Milan and Florence but more than in Turin and Genoa.

Transport, groceries, dining

The monthly urban TPER pass is in line with other large cities and school pupils resident in the region travel free with Salta su; the university negotiates discounted annual passes. Groceries are at northern averages, with the Mercato delle Erbe and district markets cheaper than the Quadrilatero shops; a meal in an osteria remains affordable, while central bars have raised prices. A car is of little use in the centre (ZTL and the 30 km/h city) and the bicycle is the cheapest way around.

Typical choices

Students rent rooms in the university area, Cirenaica, San Donato, Bolognina and Saragozza or live in ER.GO residences; single workers choose Bolognina and Porto, families Savena, Murri, Borgo Panigale or the belt municipalities (Casalecchio, San Lazzaro) linked by suburban buses and the metropolitan rail service.
