Municipality and Quartieri
Electronic identity card, residence and certificates are booked online from the municipal portal (Iperbole) and handled at the registry offices in the centre and the Quartieri; with SPID or CIE many services are fully digital. The Quartieri are the first point of contact for social services, nursery schools and reports; the municipal URP office and the Informagiovani Multitasking in Piazza Maggiore guide newcomers on work, training and volunteering; the municipality has a Sportello Lavoro and, for foreign citizens, guidance services run with ASP Città di Bologna.
Waste and water
Hera runs waste, water and gas. Separate collection combines street bins, in many areas opened with the Carta Smeraldo (a card that records residual-waste disposals), and door-to-door collection in the historic centre with a street-by-street calendar; paper, plastic and metals, glass, organic and residual waste must be separated, and the Rifiutologo app tells you where each item goes and where the collection centres for bulky items and appliances are. Tap water is drinkable and monitored; the neighbourhood "water houses" dispense it free, sparkling too.
- Markets: Mercato delle Erbe in via Ugo Bassi (food and kitchens), the Quadrilatero for historic shops, the Piazzola market in piazza VIII Agosto on Fridays and Saturdays (clothing), Mercato Albani in Bolognina, the Saturday Mercato Ritrovato at the Cineteca.
- Shopping: via Indipendenza and via Rizzoli for chains, via D'Azeglio and via Farini for upmarket shops, Galleria Cavour, via San Felice and via Saragozza for neighbourhood shops; shopping centres outside the city (Centro Lame, Gran Reno in Casalecchio).
- Libraries: Salaborsa in Piazza del Nettuno 3 (free membership, newspaper room, children's section), the Archiginnasio for historical study, a municipal library in every Quartiere, university libraries open to enrolled students.
- Newcomers: Informagiovani Multitasking (Piazza Maggiore 6), the municipal Sportello Lavoro, services for foreign citizens run by ASP and the third sector, the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione at the Prefettura for non-EU citizens.
