The university
The Università degli Studi Magna Graecia di Catanzaro is a young university (autonomous since 1998, after being a branch of the University of Reggio Calabria) concentrated at the "Salvatore Venuta" campus in Germaneto, Viale Europa, home to the departments, lecture halls, library and the university hospital, now part of the Renato Dulbecco university hospital trust. The offer is strong in the medical and health area (medicine and surgery, dentistry, pharmacy, health professions) and includes law, economics, sociology and English-taught courses that attract international students. The city also has the Academy of Fine Arts and a site of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Nocera Terinese.
Student support
Student support for UMG students is run by the Fondazione Università Magna Graecia, which publishes the annual scholarship call (deadline in early September for the following academic year), allocates beds in the campus university residences and runs the canteen through a dedicated app. The residences are in Germaneto, a few steps from the lecture halls.
Where students live
Out-of-town students split between Germaneto, convenient for classes but with few services and little evening life, the historic centre, where rooms are cheap and the bars are, and Catanzaro Lido, chosen by those who want the sea and the station. The link between the three nuclei is provided by AMC buses and the Ferrovie della Calabria railway, but many students move by car.
