What to see
The historic centre is visited on foot from Piazza Matteotti along Corso Mazzini: the cathedral, rebuilt after the 1943 bombings, with the relics of Saint Vitalian; the Basilica of the Immacolata; the monumental complex of San Giovanni on the remains of the Norman castle, now an exhibition space; and Villa Trieste (public gardens) with the belvedere over the Fiumarella and the Bisantis Bridge, Riccardo Morandi's 1962 reinforced-concrete arch, among the widest in the world when built. The MARCA, the Province's arts museum, shows ancient and contemporary art; the Mediterranean Biodiversity Park, also run by the Province, is a large urban park with sculptures, ponds and the Military History Museum. The Teatro Politeama (designed by Paolo Portoghesi, 2002) hosts the main season.
- Catanzaro Lido: sandy beach and promenade, reachable by train and bus from the centre.
- Copanello and Caminia: cliffs and coves 15 km to the south; Soverato, the coast's best-known resort.
- Squillace: village with a Norman castle and a ceramics tradition.
- Sila (National Park): Villaggio Mancuso, Lake Ampollino, Calabrian pine forests, skiing at Lorica and Camigliatello; one hour.
- Tiriolo: isthmus village from which both seas are visible; Scolacium at Roccelletta di Borgia, an archaeological site with the Norman basilica.
- Le Castella and Capo Rizzuto (marine reserve) towards Crotone; Serra San Bruno and its Charterhouse to the south.
Seasons and tourist tax
From May to September the Lido is the destination; the centre is best visited in spring and autumn, when the wind is less cold. On 16 July the city celebrates Saint Vitalian with a procession and fireworks; in summer the Lido hosts concerts and the "Settembre al Parco" festival takes place in the Biodiversity Park. Guests in accommodation pay the municipal tourist tax, managed through the Comune's dedicated portal, with rates by category and season.
