Identity: Achaean colony of Magna Graecia, a city with the Papanice district
The municipality's tourism portal presents Crotone as an Achaean colony, a centre of Magna Graecia, seat of the Pythagorean school and guardian of the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia. The statute recognises the title of City (decree of 2 February 1938) and establishes the Papanice district, the only settlement in the territory named in the text.

Origins
According to the VisitCrotone portal, run by the municipality, the city "was born as an Achaean colony, a vital centre of Magna Graecia", was the seat of the Pythagorean school and guardian of the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia. In Roman times the area became a hub of consular roads; towers, walls and the Castle of Charles V tell of later defences, palaces and Baroque churches of the early modern age.
The statute
The municipal statute recognises Crotone's title of City, granted by decree of 2 February 1938, and the coat of arms and banner assigned by royal decree of 30 April 1903. The municipality also counts people from Crotone who emigrated elsewhere as part of the community. The statute names no patron saint.
Territory and districts
The municipality comprises the main town, the centre of Papanice and other unnamed settlements. The statute provides for dividing the territory into districts (circoscrizioni), whose number and boundaries are set by regulation, and expressly establishes the Papanice district, recognising its "particular condition" as an urban centre.
