Municipality and documents
Electronic identity card, residence and certificates are booked through the municipality's booking agenda and handled at the registry offices (Palazzo Vecchio and the five Quartieri, with the central registry at the Parterre); with SPID or CIE many certificates are digital. The Quartieri are the point of contact for nursery schools, social services and reports. The municipal Informagiovani and PortaleGiovani guide on work, training and volunteering; for non-EU citizens the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione is at the Prefettura and the municipality runs guidance services with the third sector.
Waste and water
Waste is managed by AliaEstra (Plures group), which serves the provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia: in the historic centre collection is door to door with a street-by-street calendar and dedicated bags, in the districts through street bins, some card-operated; paper, mixed packaging (plastic and metals), glass, organic and residual waste must be separated, and the "Dove lo butto" tool and the app give the rule for each item. Bulky items and appliances go to the ecocentri or can be collected free by appointment. Tap water, supplied by Publiacqua, is drinkable; the high-quality public fountains (fontanelli) in many districts dispense free water, sparkling too.
- Markets: the Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo (food on the ground floor), the Sant'Ambrogio market (the residents' favourite), the Cascine market on Tuesday mornings (clothing and food), district markets in Novoli, Isolotto and Campo di Marte.
- Shopping: via Tornabuoni and via della Vigna Nuova for luxury, via Calzaiuoli, via de' Cerretani and via Panzani for chains, the Oltrarno and Santo Spirito for artisans and small shops, via Gioberti in Campo di Marte for neighbourhood shops; the I Gigli shopping centre in Campi Bisenzio.
- Libraries: the Biblioteca delle Oblate (via dell'Oriuolo, free membership, terrace facing the dome), the National Central Library for study and research, BiblioteCaNova in Isolotto and municipal libraries in every Quartiere.
- Paperwork: residence and change of address at the Quartieri, ZTL and resident parking permits through the municipality, registration with a GP at the Azienda USL Toscana Centro.
