When and how

Florence is among Europe's most crowded cities relative to its size: from Easter to October, with peaks at Easter, on spring long weekends and in July-August, the centre between the station, the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio is full from morning to evening. For the Uffizi, the Accademia and the dome online booking is effectively compulsory and the first morning slot or late afternoon is best; the Uffizi offer a reduced ticket after 16:00. On the first Sunday of the month state museums are free and very crowded. November-February, Pitti Uomo excepted, is the quietest period. The Firenze Card covers dozens of museums for 72 hours.

Events, day trips, UNESCO

Events: the Scoppio del Carro at Easter, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in spring, the Calcio Storico and St John's fireworks in June, Pitti Uomo in January and June at the Fortezza da Basso, the Festa della Rificolona on 7 September, the Estate Fiorentina with events across the city. Day trips: Fiesole (bus), Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo and Prato by regional train, Chianti and San Gimignano by car or bus. UNESCO heritage: the historic centre (1982) and the Medici villas and gardens (2013), including Boboli, La Petraia and Castello within the municipality.
