Identity: the city inside the hexagon of walls, Piazza Dante and Corso Carducci

Grosseto's historic centre is still enclosed by bastioned walls with an almost geometric layout, a hexagon inscribed in a circle. Inside, Piazza Dante, known as piazza delle Catene, is the main square, with the Provincial Palace and the side of the Cathedral; Corso Carducci has always been the city's main axis, with San Pietro, a church mentioned in a document of 1188.

Inside the walls

According to the Comune, the historic centre is still surrounded by bastioned walls that have kept their original appearance almost intact. The circuit has an almost geometric shape, a hexagon inscribed in a circle, which the Comune most probably links to the six "balls" of the Medici coat of arms. The walls are entrusted to the Istituzione Le Mura.

The civic squares

Piazza Dante, also known as piazza delle Catene, is the city's main square. At its back stands the neo-Gothic Provincial Palace, designed by Lorenzo Porciatti, which incorporates the remains of a medieval building, most probably the 14th-century Palazzo Pubblico; two sides are closed by porticoes of medieval layout and the fourth by the side of the Cathedral. Next to the Cathedral is the Town Hall, built from 1867 and seat of the Comune since 1870; in Piazza del Duomo, until the 1930s, stood the Palazzo dei Priori.

Corso Carducci

Corso Carducci has always been the city's main axis. On it stands the church of San Pietro, a small Romanesque church mentioned in a document of 1188, which the Comune describes as Grosseto's oldest religious building; restoration in 2005 found the remains of an earlier, smaller church.
