Visiting Latina: 20th-century architecture and the Circeo National Park

Italy's national tourism portal presents Latina, the former Littoria, for its rationalist architecture: Palazzo M and the 32-metre civic tower, which offers a view over the city. Latina is one of the towns of the Circeo National Park, established in 1934, with its coastal dune, four coastal lakes and the Selva di Circe forest.

In the city

The former Littoria preserves a rationalist architecture that the national tourism portal describes as a testimony of 20th-century Italy. Its most emblematic building is Palazzo M, built in the shape of Mussolini's initial; for a view from above, climb the 32-metre civic tower.

Circeo National Park

Established in 1934, the Circeo National Park lies on the coast between Anzio and Terracina, about 100 km from Rome; its towns include Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Latina. It includes the crescent-shaped coastal dune, about 25 km long from Sabaudia to Capo Portiere and protected by the European Union; four coastal lakes in succession (Sabaudia or Paola, Caprolace, Monaci and Fogliano); the Selva di Circe, one of the best-preserved lowland forests in Italy; the Circeo promontory and the island of Zannone.

Nearby

The national portal also points to the Garden of Ninfa, with plants growing among the ruins of an abandoned town; Sperlonga; Gaeta, with its medieval centre and Angevin-Aragonese castle; Formia; and the Pontine Islands (Ventotene, Ponza, Palmarola, Gavi, Zannone and Santo Stefano), about two hours away by ferry.
