Climate and air: temporary PM10 measures, traffic stops and biomass stoves

In the winter semester, when PM10 exceeds 50 µg/m³ on consecutive days, the regional temporary measures kick in within the municipality: after 2 days level 1 (traffic stop in the bounded urban area, ban on biomass heaters below 4 stars, 19 degrees indoors, no outdoor burning), after 7 days level 2. The status is checked on the regional InfoAria site.

When the measures start

The municipality's sheet on temporary air-quality measures (season 1 October – 31 March) provides for activation when PM10 exceeds 50 µg/m³ on consecutive days: after 2 days level 1 starts, after 7 days level 2 is added; restrictions begin on a Tuesday or a Friday. At level 1 a traffic stop applies to the most polluting vehicles within the urban area bounded by the roads listed in the sheet, which are themselves excluded from the stop; year-round structural limits on the most polluting vehicles apply separately under regional rules.

Heating and other bans

Also at level 1, domestic wood-biomass heaters below the 4-star class are banned where an alternative heating system exists, as is all outdoor burning (bonfires, barbecues, fireworks); indoor heating is capped at 19 degrees with a 2-degree tolerance, idling engines are banned, and the spreading of slurry and fertilisers is restricted. At level 2 the biomass requirement rises to at least 5 stars. The activation status is checked on the regional InfoAria site, which also offers e-mail alerts; the municipality publishes the measures in its air-quality section.
