Identity: old town under the castle, Piazza Aranci and Marina di Massa

Massa's layout reads in two periods: the medieval core under the Malaspina Castle and the Renaissance town on the plain, with Piazza Aranci at the centre of straight streets. The coast was added later, with Marina di Massa and its beach establishments.

A centre in two periods

According to Italia.it, Massa's old town has early-medieval origins. The medieval part lies below the castle, which dominates from its bastioned hill; the Malaspina added a Renaissance palace between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance part stands on the plain, with Piazza Aranci where ordered, wide, straight streets converge. At the foot of the rock, the church of San Rocco keeps a wooden Crucifix which the source links, as a possible attribution, to an early work by Michelangelo.

Toward the sea

The modern city grew toward the coast until it joined Marina di Massa, with its beach establishments. The municipal site lists among its highlighted places the Teatro Guglielmi (piazza del Teatro 1), Villa della Rinchiostra (via dell'Acqua 175) and the Martana air-raid shelter.
