ASP and GP

Community care is run by the Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale of Messina, covering city and province. You choose, change or revoke your GP and paediatrician online from the ASP portal or at the Messina desk (one of the service's provincial offices), bringing your health card and an ID document; those arriving from another region must also show the de-registration certificate from their previous health authority, and parents choosing a paediatrician for a newborn need the birth self-certification and the child's tax code.

Hospitals and emergency departments

Three hospital trusts operate in the city. The "G. Martino" university hospital (AOU Policlinico) is the University of Messina's teaching hospital, combining care, research and teaching. The Papardo hospital, in contrada Papardo (switchboard 090-3991), has an emergency department with the "Codice Rosa" pathway reserved for victims of violence. The IRCCS Centro Neurolesi "Bonino-Pulejo" has two sites: the research and rehabilitation centre at Casazza (via Palermo, SS 113) and the Piemonte hospital at viale Europa 45, which has an emergency department.

Bookings

For bookings, the Policlinico has a centralised CUP on the freephone 800 332277 (landlines; 0941-536681 from mobiles); the Papardo points to the same freephone for booking visits and services. Across all Sicilian health authorities you can also book on the regional SovraCUP with an electronic prescription.

Opening hours, locations, numbers and rules change often: check the ASP Messina website (asp.messina.it) and the individual hospitals' sites before going in person.
