Food and going out

Milanese cuisine is Lombard: saffron risotto, cotoletta alla milanese, ossobuco, cassoeula in winter, mondeghili meatballs, michetta bread, panettone at Christmas. Alongside tradition, Milan has Italy's most varied restaurant scene (Asian at Paolo Sarpi and Porta Venezia, South American, Middle Eastern, fine dining) and the evening aperitivo is a social institution, from a drink with snacks to a buffet.

Evening areas: the Navigli and the Darsena, Isola and Corso Como–Garibaldi, Porta Venezia (also the heart of the LGBT scene), Brera, Porta Romana, Lambrate and NoLo for younger venues, Tortona during events. Big concerts are at the Forum in Assago, the racecourse and San Siro; clubs and theatres are spread across the city.

  • Markets: covered municipal markets (Isola, Wagner, Morsenchio, the Mercato Centrale at Stazione Centrale), weekly street markets in every Municipio (Via Fauché and Viale Papiniano on Tuesdays and Saturdays), the Fiera di Sinigaglia on Saturdays at the Darsena, the antiques market on the Naviglio Grande on the last Sunday of the month.
  • Parks: Parco Sempione behind the Castle, Giardini Montanelli at Porta Venezia, the Biblioteca degli Alberi at Porta Nuova, Parco Nord and Parco Lambro on the edges, Boscoincittà and Parco delle Cave to the west, the Idroscalo with its swimmable lake and the Parco Agricolo Sud with the abbeys of Chiaravalle and Mirasole.
  • Sport: Inter and Milan at San Siro, Olimpia Milano at the Forum, the Milano Marathon in April, municipal pools (Cozzi, Lido, Argelati), rowing at the Idroscalo, the Martesana cycle path to the Adda river.
  • Free: Pirelli HangarBicocca, the Cimitero Monumentale, the free civic museum openings listed by the municipality, state museums on the first Sunday of the month, churches, courtyards open during the Fuorisalone, Piano City in May.
  • Out of town: lakes Como, Maggiore and Garda, Bergamo, Pavia, the Prealps and Valtellina for skiing and hiking, the Lomellina rice fields by bike.
