Cost of living in Palermo
Housing cheaper than in the big Centre-North cities, but the historic centre is rising fast because of short-term lets and Via Libertà costs as much as a northern city. Cheap street food and markets; low-cost AMAT pass. Insularity weighs on some goods and on travel; a car costs in time and parking.

Housing
OMI quotations for Palermo's central zones remain below Rome, Milan, Florence and Bologna, but the city has two markets: the historic centre, where rents have risen quickly with tourism and the conversion of whole buildings into short-term lets, and the bourgeois districts of Libertà and Politeama, always the most expensive. Zisa, Noce, Oreto and the working-class districts offer very low rents; Mondello is expensive in summer and empties in winter.
Groceries, transport, insularity
Eating is cheap: market street food, friggitorie and neighbourhood trattorias remain among the cheapest in Italy, while historic-centre restaurants charge tourist-city prices. Shopping at the Ballarò and Capo markets is good value; manufactured goods and freight feel the effect of insularity. The monthly AMAT pass is among the cheapest of the regional capitals; a car costs mainly in time, with traffic and the search for parking, and paid bays cover the whole centre. Travelling to the mainland requires a plane or ship and weighs on the budget of those who go home often.
