What people eat
Palermo is a street-food capital: panelle (chickpea-flour fritters) and potato crocchè in bread, pane ca meusa (veal spleen and lung), arancine (feminine, here), sfincione (thick focaccia with onion and caciocavallo), stigghiola (grilled offal, in the evening at street corners), then pasta with sardines, caponata, sarde a beccafico, cannoli and cassata, ice cream in a brioche. People eat at the Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria markets, in friggitorie and neighbourhood trattorias; pastry is serious business and the wines come from the whole island (Nero d'Avola, Grillo, Etna, Marsala).
- Mondello: free beach and bathing establishments, buses from the Politeama; evening promenade in summer.
- Monte Pellegrino and the Capo Gallo reserve: trails, sanctuary, view over the city; free.
- Favorita park: the big city park below Monte Pellegrino, running and cycling; Giardino Inglese and Villa Giulia in town.
- The University Botanical Garden and Villa Trabia: historic greenery, paid and free.
- Teatro Massimo (opera and ballet) and Politeama Garibaldi (Sicilian Symphony Orchestra); Teatro Biondo for drama.
- Renzo Barbera stadium: Palermo FC matches.
- Foro Italico: lawn by the sea for picnics, running and summer evenings.
Evenings and sport
Nightlife is among the liveliest in the South and lasts all year: the Vucciria and Via Chiavettieri for open-air bars until late, the Kalsa and Piazza Sant'Anna for bars and restaurants, the Politeama and Via Isidoro La Lumia for cocktail bars and the bourgeois scene, Mondello in summer. Prices are low and the streets crowded until the small hours; noise is an issue for those living in the centre. Sport: sailing and rowing at Mondello and Addaura, five-a-side football and gyms everywhere, hiking on the mountains of the Conca d'Oro.
