Identity: Lombard capital, university town and neighbourhood committees

Pavia's identity rests on two legacies: its role as capital of the Lombard Kingdom and then of the Kingdom of Italy, and the university with its historic colleges. Neighbourhood participation runs through the Comitati di Quartiere, a municipal project to strengthen ties with the territory.

The kings' capital

The tourist portal recalls that for almost five centuries the kings of the Kingdom of Italy were crowned in the Basilica di San Michele Maggiore, when Pavia was one of the peninsula's main political capitals; the basilica is already named as an important religious place in Lombard times.

The university city

The Università di Pavia has marked the city's identity since the Studium Generale was founded in 1361; the site recalls among its teachers Alessandro Volta, Camillo Golgi (Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1906), Giulio Natta and Carlo Rubbia. The tourist portal calls the system of historic university colleges, such as the Borromeo and the Ghislieri, unique in Italy.

Neighbourhoods

The Comune presents the Comitati di Quartiere (neighbourhood committees) as a strategic project to strengthen the link between the administration and the territory; the service to set them up is in the registry section of the portal. Borgo Ticino, across the Ponte Coperto, is the historic district on the river.
