Hill climate: cold winters, breezy summers
At almost 500 metres on the acropolis, Perugia has cold winters with fog in the valleys and occasional snow, hot but breezy summers with cool nights. Good air quality compared with lowland cities; monitoring by ARPA Umbria. Rainfall spread through the year, heaviest in autumn.

Seasons
The hilltop position makes the difference: in winter fog fills the Tiber valley and the lowland villages (Ponte San Giovanni, Ponte Felcino) while the acropolis often stays in the sun; wind and cold are felt more up high, though, and snow, a few days a year, blocks the steep streets of the centre. Summer is hot in the middle of the day but less muggy than the Po valley or Florence, with nights that cool down; summer storms are frequent over the hills. Spring is long and the most pleasant season; autumn is the wettest period.
Air quality
Air quality is good compared with lowland cities: exceedances of the daily PM10 limit are few and concentrated in the cold months, due to domestic heating (biomass in the villages) and traffic on the valley floors of Fontivegge and Ponte San Giovanni. ARPA Umbria publishes station data and bulletins; the municipality adopts traffic measures in critical periods under the regional plan.
Hazards
The main hazard is seismic: Umbria is a high-seismicity zone and Perugia felt the earthquakes of 1997 and 2016, without serious damage in the city; renters and buyers ask whether the building has been checked. Villages along the Tiber and the streams are exposed to local flooding in intense autumn rains.
