Cost of living: among the cheapest regional capitals of central Italy
Low rents and house prices, student rooms among the cheapest in Italy, transport and groceries at average levels; a car is almost essential for those living in the villages. The historic centre costs more than the districts but remains affordable.

Housing
Perugia is among the cheapest regional capitals of central and northern Italy for housing: rents in the historic centre, though the highest in the city, remain far from those of Florence or Bologna, and student rooms and beds are among the cheapest in Italy. Elce, Monteluce, Fontivegge and the villages cost even less. Many flats in the centre are in old buildings without a lift, reachable only on foot or through the ZTL.
Transport, groceries, car
The Busitalia urban pass and the integrated pass with the Minimetrò are averagely priced; university students get reduced fares. Groceries are at national averages and eating out is cheap: torta al testo flatbread and pizza by the slice are meals for a few euros, and the trattorie in the centre have moderate prices outside the Umbria Jazz and Eurochocolate periods. Those living in the villages need a car, with the related cost; the car parks below the centre are paid but the Minimetrò makes them convenient.
Typical choices
Students rent rooms in the historic centre, Elce and Monteluce or live in ADiSU halls; those working in the centre or at the hospital choose Elce, Madonna Alta and San Sisto; families prefer the villages (Ponte San Giovanni, San Sisto, Castel del Piano, San Marco) with larger homes and shops.
