History

Alessio Fontana, an official of Charles V's imperial chancery, in 1558 left his property in his will to the municipality to found a college of studies. On 9 February 1617 King Philip III granted the Jesuit college the status of royal university, making Sassari the first royal university in Sardinia.

The university today

The university is organised in eleven departments, with 63 degree programmes and 10 doctoral programmes; besides Sassari it has sites elsewhere in Sardinia, including Alghero, Olbia, Nuoro and Oristano.

International students and housing

The university portal has a section for international students, a list of international programmes and an English-language site; for those looking for accommodation there is the «Vetrina alloggi», a housing listings portal linked to the university.
