Work: steelworks, port and Special Economic Zone

The former Ilva steelworks, owned by Acciaierie d'Italia under extraordinary administration, has a wage-guarantee (cassa integrazione) agreement with a training plan. The port, run by the Ionian Sea Port System Authority, has been designated a hub for offshore wind and has a port-employment portal. Since 2024 Taranto has been in the single Special Economic Zone for southern Italy.

Steelworks

The Taranto steelworks belong to Acciaierie d'Italia, under extraordinary administration. During her visit on 21 October 2024 the Minister of Labour referred to the cassa integrazione agreement, which excluded workers in maintenance cycles and those assigned to health, safety and environmental protection, and to the 120,000 hours of training planned, mainly in IT skills; blast furnace 1 had restarted 15 days ahead of schedule. The company's situation changes often and should be followed on official sources.

Port

The Ionian Sea Port System Authority is based at the Porto Mercantile, San Cataldo pier. The port of Taranto has been designated by the Government a strategic hub for the development of offshore wind and has a new cruise terminal. The Authority's website has a port-employment portal, with sections on the agency supplying port labour and providing professional retraining and on temporary port work under Article 17 of Law 84/1994.

Special Economic Zone

Since 1 January 2024 Puglia has been part of the single Special Economic Zone (ZES) for southern Italy (Decree-Law 124/2023), which replaced the eight previous ZES. For projects within its remit, the Port Authority receives applications on the S.U.D. ZES digital desk, convenes the conference of services and issues the single authorisation.
