Visiting Turin

A city of museums (Egyptian, Royal Museums, Cinema at the Mole), Baroque squares and UNESCO Savoy residences. Two or three days are enough, best in spring or autumn. The Torino+Piemonte Card and the Abbonamento Musei cover most sites. Events: Book Fair, Torino Film Festival, Artissima, ATP Finals.

  • Savoy Residences (UNESCO since 1997): in the city Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Carignano, Villa della Regina and the Castello del Valentino; nearby the Reggia di Venaria, the hunting lodge of Stupinigi, the Castello di Rivoli (contemporary art) and Racconigi.
  • Hill and river: Basilica of Superga (with the rack tramway), Monte dei Cappuccini, walks along the Murazzi and in the Parco del Valentino with its Medieval Village.
  • Markets: Porta Palazzo, which MuseoTorino describes as the largest market in Europe, with the Balon flea market on Saturdays.

When and how

Spring and autumn are the best seasons; winter is grey but has the Luci d'Artista light installations in the central streets and the ski season an hour away. In summer most museums stay open but the city empties in August.

The Torino+Piemonte Card (1–5 days, sold by Turismo Torino) includes admission to the main city museums and monuments and discounts on tourist transport; longer stays are better served by the Abbonamento Musei Piemonte Valle d'Aosta, an annual pass valid at more than two hundred sites in the two regions. State museums apply the national free entry on the first Sunday of the month.

Events and day trips

The International Book Fair (May, Lingotto Fiere) is Italy's largest publishing fair. Then come the Torino Film Festival and Artissima (November), MITO SettembreMusica (shared with Milan), the Torino Jazz Festival, Club to Club and Kappa FuturFestival for electronic music, Terra Madre Salone del Gusto (September, biennial) and the Nitto ATP Finals tennis tournament (November).

Day trips: the Langhe and Roero (Alba, Barolo) for wine and truffles, the Sacra di San Michele, lakes Maggiore and Orta, the ski resorts of the Olympic valleys (Sestriere, Bardonecchia), Ivrea and the Aosta Valley.
