First steps with the municipality
- Residence registration
The declaration is filed online with SPID or CIE through the municipality's DiMe portal or at the registry desk (Ca' Farsetti in Venice, Via Spalti or other offices in Mestre), by appointment booked on the same portal. Proof of title to the dwelling is required; in the historic centre the address is sestiere and house number, not the calle. The local police verify the address.
- Electronic identity card
Booking on the Interior Ministry's CIE agenda or through DiMe; issued at the desk and delivered by post (post does reach the islands, but takes longer).
- Venezia Unica and health
With residence or domicile you apply for the Venezia Unica card for reduced transport fares. Choosing a GP goes through Azienda ULSS 3 Serenissima; the reference hospital on the islands is the Civile (SS. Giovanni e Paolo), on the mainland the Angelo in Mestre.
Waste, water, deliveries
Waste collection is by Veritas and follows two systems. In the historic centre and islands there are no street bins: collection is door-to-door, with operators passing in the morning at set times to take bags handed over or left in front of the door, carrying everything with trolleys and boats; putting waste out at other times is fined. On the mainland building bins and door-to-door collection with a calendar apply. The ecocentri take bulky items and the «Dove lo butto» service explains how to sort.
Tap water, managed by Veritas, is drinkable and of good quality; public fountains are numerous and the municipality encourages refilling bottles. Home deliveries on the islands go through couriers working with boats and trolleys: times are longer and some services do not deliver to the historic centre; removals require specialised firms with boats.
- Shopping: the Rialto market, supermarkets in the sestieri (smaller and with less choice than on the mainland), shops for residents in Cannaregio and Castello; shopping streets the Mercerie and San Marco for luxury, Strada Nova and Rialto for everything else, Mestre (Piazza Ferretto) and the Nave de Vero mall in Marghera for large retail.
- Libraries: the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana on Piazzetta San Marco, the civic libraries (VEZ in Mestre at Villa Erizzo, with neighbourhood branches), the Fondazione Querini Stampalia with reading rooms open until evening, the Ca' Foscari and Iuav libraries open to outsiders on registration.
- Newcomers: the welcome units of Ca' Foscari and Iuav for students and researchers; the Prefecture's immigration desk and municipal services for permits and Italian courses; the rowing clubs and neighbourhood associations (very active in defending residents) as a way into the Venetian community; Mestre has a network of associations and civic centres by district.
- Pace: on the islands days are set by the vaporetti and the tides; shops close early in the evening and many services are in Mestre.
