Identity: Pallanza, Intra and Suna, three centres merged in 1939
Verbania was created in 1939 by merging Intra and Pallanza. The Distretto dei Laghi describes Pallanza as a medieval lakeside centre, Intra as a former manufacturing and religious capital between two rivers and Suna as the best-preserved hamlet; at Fondo Toce there is a special nature reserve declared in 1990.

Pallanza
The Distretto dei Laghi places Pallanza's first settlement on the Castagnola hill, where the Romanesque oratory of San Remigio stands; in the Middle Ages the community, together with the islands, became an important place for activities and trade. From piazza Gramsci you can see medieval portals, houses and frescoed walls; on the hill is the historic garden of Villa San Remigio.
Intra
Intra lies between two rivers that shaped its life and economy. From the Middle Ages it was the religious capital of the area, processing local products and shipping them by lake to Milan, Switzerland and the plain; in the nineteenth century industrialisation made it a manufacturing capital. Among the churches of the centre the page cites San Fabiano, San Rocco, Santa Marta and the Basilica of San Vittore.
Suna and the Fondo Toce reserve
Suna is described as Verbania's best-preserved hamlet, with narrow courts, stone portals and facades painted with sacred images. The Fondo Toce Special Nature Reserve, 365 hectares declared a reserve in 1990, is an intact wetland reachable on foot and by bicycle.
