The Azienda USL hospitals in the city
The Azienda USL Toscana Centro, which runs 13 hospitals with 2,735 beds, manages three hospitals in Florence: the Santa Maria Nuova at piazza Santa Maria Nuova 1, right in the centre, the San Giovanni di Dio at via Torregalli 3 in the south-west, and the Piero Palagi, mainly devoted to outpatient and day-hospital care.
Careggi and Meyer
The emergency room of the Careggi university hospital is the Trauma Center-Pronto Soccorso at pavilion 12 DEAS, entered from viale Pieraccini: it handles emergencies and urgent cases, with triage at the entrance, and since 2016 a dedicated major-trauma coordination unit. The paediatric emergency room of the Meyer children's hospital is open 24 hours a day and, together with the hospital's Trauma Center, takes children with isolated trauma up to age 13 and multi-district trauma; it includes a short intensive observation unit and a fast "see & treat" track for minor urgencies.

Bookings for visits and exams in the Azienda USL Toscana Centro go through the single CUP number 055 54 54 54 (Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, Saturdays and pre-holidays 8am-1pm). The out-of-hours doctor service (guardia medica) answers on the single European number 116117, active in the Florence area since 16 September 2024 and now across Tuscany: it runs on weekdays from 8pm to 8am and on holidays and pre-holidays.
