Tourism and public sector

The Aosta Valley labour market is small and seasonal: hotels, restaurants, ski lifts, ski schools and mountain guides hire from December to April and from June to September, on fixed-term contracts, often with accommodation provided by the employer. Between seasons many workers move to the coast or abroad. The regional public administration, health care and schools are the second pool: regional competitions require a French language test.

Industry, agriculture, cross-border work

Aosta hosts a special-steel plant and the regional hydroelectric company; in the lower valley (Pont-Saint-Martin, Verrès) there are small engineering and electronics firms. Agriculture (Fontina, wine, apples) offers seasonal work on the summer Alpine pastures. A share of residents commute as frontier workers to Switzerland (Valais, via the Great St Bernard) or France (Chamonix, via the Mont Blanc tunnel).

Employment services

Job centres are run directly by the Region (Department of labour policies) and gathered on the Valle d'Aosta Lavoro portal, which publishes vacancies, training calls and active labour measures. For public competitions, knowledge of French is tested in a preliminary exam.
