Overview
Territory and cities
Basilicata (historically Lucania) is almost half mountainous and otherwise hilly: the Lucanian Apennines with the Pollino (Serra Dolcedorme, 2,267 m), the Sirino and the Vulture, the clay hills of the calanchi badlands, the Metaponto plain on the Ionian Sea and the short Tyrrhenian stretch at Maratea. Potenza, the capital, lies at 819 metres and is Italy's highest regional capital; Matera, the second city, is known for the Sassi cave districts. The other towns are Melfi, Pisticci, Policoro, Lauria, Lavello and Venosa. No municipality exceeds 70,000 inhabitants.
Economy
The economy has three poles: the Stellantis plant at Melfi with its supplier chain at San Nicola di Melfi, the region's largest industrial site; oil and gas extraction in the Val d'Agri (Viggiano oil centre, Eni), which Eni describes as the largest onshore field in western Europe, and at Tempa Rossa (TotalEnergies), which brings the Region royalties also used for schemes benefiting residents; irrigated farming in the Metapontino (strawberries, citrus, vegetables) and Vulture wine (Aglianico). Basilicata exports water to Apulia through the Pertusillo and Monte Cotugno reservoirs. Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019, has transformed regional tourism. The region is part of the ZES unica.
Who moves here
Basilicata has been losing population for decades: young people leave for Apulia, Lazio, the North and abroad, and many inland municipalities have fewer than a thousand inhabitants. Newcomers come to work at Melfi or in the oil sector, to study at the University of Basilicata, for tourism and film work in Matera or for cheap housing, with some foreigners settling in the villages. The share of foreign residents is among the lowest in Italy, with farm workers in the Metapontino and the Vulture.
