Organisation

The regional health service, considered among the most efficient in Italy, is organised in eight Aziende USL: Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Imola, Ferrara and Romagna (covering Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini). Alongside them are the University Hospital Trusts of Parma, Modena, Bologna (IRCCS Sant'Orsola) and Ferrara, the IRCCS Rizzoli (orthopaedics) and the IRCCS in Meldola (oncology). GP choice is made online with SPID/CIE or at AUSL desks.

Health record, booking, CAU

The regional Electronic Health Record (fascicolo-sanitario.it) lets you see reports, prescriptions and vaccinations, change GP, pay co-payments and book; bookings also go through each AUSL's phone booking centre, desks and pharmacies. Since 2023 the Region has opened Assistance and Urgency Centres (CAU), clinics open 24 hours for non-serious cases as an alternative to emergency rooms. The Region decides its own co-payment exemptions and additional charges (also by income band), to be checked each year.

Apennines and Riviera

In the Apennines rescue is provided by the Emilia-Romagna Alpine and Cave Rescue with the regional helicopter (bases in Bologna, Parma, Ravenna and Pavullo): call 112. On the Riviera, in summer, the 118 service opens seasonal posts and a tourist medical service.

Co-payments, exemptions and registration procedures change: check the Regione Emilia-Romagna Health portal or your AUSL before acting.
