Organisation

The territory is divided into ten local health authorities: ASL Roma 1, 2, 3 (city of Rome), Roma 4 (Civitavecchia and northern coast), Roma 5 (Tivoli and Aniene valley), Roma 6 (Castelli Romani and southern coast), ASL Frosinone, Latina, Rieti and Viterbo. Rome concentrates the hospital trusts (San Camillo-Forlanini, San Giovanni-Addolorata, Sant'Andrea), the Umberto I and Tor Vergata university hospitals, the Spallanzani institute for infectious diseases and large accredited private or religious hospitals (Gemelli, Bambino Gesù). The provinces depend on Roman hospitals for high-specialty care.

Recovery plan and quality

Lazio entered a recovery plan for its health deficit in 2007 and was run by a commissioner ad acta from 2008 to 2020, when the Region regained ordinary powers; the plan involved closures and conversions of small hospitals, mainly in the provinces. In the monitoring of essential care levels (LEA) for 2023 under the Nuovo Sistema di Garanzia, Lazio is among the compliant regions, with a score lower than the previous year. Waiting lists for specialist care and overcrowding in Rome's emergency departments are the most reported problems.

Access to services

Specialist appointments are booked through the regional ReCUP (phone, Salute Lazio portal, Salute Lazio app and pharmacies) with the electronic prescription; the portal also lets you choose a GP, consult the electronic health record and pay co-payments. On the Pontine islands (Ponza, Ventotene) health facilities are basic and emergencies depend on the air ambulance.

Rules on co-payments, exemptions, GP choice and bookings change: check the Salute Lazio portal or your local ASL.
