Statute and history
Lazio is a region with an ordinary statute, set up as an institution in 1970. The name recalls ancient Latium but today's borders include historically different territories: Tuscia (former Papal States), Sabina, Ciociaria and northern Terra di Lavoro (Cassino, Gaeta, Formia, moved from Campania to Lazio in 1927). There are no communities recognised under law 482/1999; in southern Lazio the dialects are Campanian in type, around Viterbo Tuscan-Umbrian.
- Rome: Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June (city holiday); Rome's birthday on 21 April
- Viterbo: Santa Rosa, 4 September, preceded on the evening of the 3rd by the carrying of the Macchina di Santa Rosa, listed in 2013 among the big shoulder-borne processional structures of UNESCO intangible heritage
- Latina: San Marco, 25 April
- Frosinone: San Silverio, 20 June
- Rieti: Santa Barbara, 4 December; Sant'Antonio in June with the candle procession
- Gaeta and Sperlonga: sea festivals in summer; Civita di Bagnoregio: Festa della Madonna Liberatrice
