Sectors

Milan concentrates headquarters, banks and insurers, consulting, law firms, advertising, publishing, fashion and design, pharmaceuticals, IT and start-ups: it is the most dynamic market for skilled profiles and the only Italian one with a significant share of English-language vacancies. The eastern provinces (Brescia, Bergamo, Lecco) and Brianza are among the most industrialised areas in Europe: metals, engineering, components, chemicals, textiles (Como silk, Brianza furniture). Pavia, Cremona, Mantua and Lodi have agri-food and logistics.

Seasonal and cross-border work

Seasonal work concentrates in lake tourism (April–October) and Valtellina (winter), and in agriculture in the lower plain. From the provinces of Como, Varese and Sondrio tens of thousands of residents commute as frontier workers to Canton Ticino and Graubünden: since 2024 the new Italy–Switzerland tax agreement applies, with different regimes for old and new frontier workers, to be checked with a professional.

Employment services

Job centres are organised at provincial level through the AFOL agencies (agencies for training, guidance and work): in the Milan area, AFOL Metropolitana. The Region funds the Dote Unica Lavoro and the GOL programme for guidance, training and outplacement; private placement (employment agencies) has its greatest weight in Italy here.
