Statute and language
The Marche are a region with an ordinary statute. The plural name comes from the old border marches of the Holy Roman Empire (Ancona, Camerino, Fermo). Dialects vary greatly from north to south: Gallo-Italic around Pesaro, central Italian around Ancona and Macerata, southern-type around Ascoli. No community in the region is among the historical linguistic minorities protected by law 482/1999.
