Sectors and districts
Florence and its plain concentrate luxury fashion and leather goods (major houses with plants in Scandicci and the Valdarno), services, tourism, university and health care; Prato is Europe's largest textile district, with a supply chain of Chinese fast-fashion firms. Lucca has paper and corrugated board (Capannori), Pistoia plant nurseries, Arezzo goldsmithing, Carrara marble, Siena pharmaceuticals (vaccines) and banking, Livorno the port and refining, Viareggio yacht yards, Larderello geothermal energy. Employment is above the national average but below the North.
Seasonal work
Tourism is the leading seasonal employer: the coast (Versilia, Etruscan Coast, Maremma, Argentario) and islands (Elba) hire from Easter to September; Florence, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano have a high season from March to October with almost continuous work. Agriculture needs labour for the grape harvest (September–October), the olive harvest (October–November) and the Pistoia nurseries. Work in Prato's textiles and in agriculture is often irregular: inspections and disputes are frequent.
Employment services
Job centres are run by ARTI (Tuscany Regional Employment Agency), which publishes vacancies, training calls and GOL measures; the Region funds traineeships, apprenticeships and vocational training through accredited providers and has a network of higher technical institutes (ITS) in fashion, engineering and agri-food.
