Statute and languages
Umbria has only two provinces and an ordinary statute; differentiated autonomy has had no follow-up here. The official language is Italian; the Umbrian dialects, of the central group, have no protection. Many services are organised at a single regional scale (booking centre, public transport, student support) given the region's small size.
Holidays
4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, patron of Italy, was reintroduced by a 2025 law as a national holiday from 2026 and in Assisi it is the most important day of the year, with a delegation from a different Italian region each year offering the oil for the votive lamp. Perugia celebrates St Constantius on 29 January (with the torcolo cake), Terni St Valentine on 14 February, Gubbio St Ubaldo with the Corsa dei Ceri on 15 May. Events: Umbria Jazz in Perugia (July), Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto (June–July), Eurochocolate in Perugia (autumn), Calendimaggio in Assisi.
