UNESCO sites and parks

UNESCO sites: Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and other Franciscan sites (2000); the basilica of San Salvatore in Spoleto and the Tempietto on the Clitunno at Campello in the Longobards in Italy serial site (2011). Parks: Monti Sibillini National Park (with the Marche; Castelluccio di Norcia with its late June–July flowering), regional parks of Monte Cucco, Monte Subasio, Trasimeno, the Tiber, Colfiorito and the Nera river with the Marmore Falls (water release times set by the power plant).

Seasons and events

The main season runs from Easter to October, with spring and autumn the best periods for villages and hills; August brings Italians to the lakes and mountains. Religious tourism (Assisi, Cascia for St Rita, Norcia for St Benedict) peaks on 4 October, 22 May and at Easter. Events: Umbria Jazz in Perugia (ten days in July), Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto (late June–July), Eurochocolate in Perugia (October–November), Corsa dei Ceri in Gubbio (15 May), Giostra della Quintana in Foligno (June and September), Spello flower carpets (Corpus Christi). In December Gubbio lights the world's largest Christmas tree on Monte Ingino.

Rules

The tourist tax is municipal and is applied by Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Spoleto and most tourist towns. There are no regional access limits; the Castelluccio flowering has access and parking rules with shuttles on peak weekends, and the Marmore Falls are visited with a ticket and set water-release times. Many villages have camera-controlled limited-traffic zones.
