Climate and hazards

Humid plain with fog and muggy summers, breezy Adriatic coast, Dolomites with snow from December to April. High PM10 in the plain (Po basin). Venice high tides regulated by MOSE; moderate seismic risk in the Belluno, Verona and Vicenza areas; storm Vaia 2018.

Plain, coast, mountains

The Veneto plain has grey foggy winters and hot muggy summers with intense thunderstorms and hail; the coastal strip (Venice, Jesolo, Chioggia) is slightly breezier and milder. Lake Garda has a Mediterranean microclimate with olive and lemon trees. The pre-Alps (Asiago, Monte Grappa) and the Dolomites (Cortina, Arabba, Falcade, Alleghe) have snowy winters with a ski season normally from December to Easter.

Air quality

The Veneto plain is part of the Po basin and shares its PM10 problem: in 2024, according to SNPA, the large majority of Italian stations above the limit were in the Po basin, with Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Treviso and Venice-Mestre among the cities affected. Every winter the Region activates temporary measures at escalating levels (limits on older diesel vehicles, bans on open burning, heating limits); ARPAV publishes the daily bulletin.

High water, floods, seismicity

In Venice high water (acqua alta, mainly from October to January) is mitigated by the MOSE barrier system, in operation since 2020, which closes the lagoon inlets above a set threshold; smaller tides still flood St Mark's Square. Storm Vaia in October 2018 devastated the Belluno forests; the Polesine remembers the 1951 Po flood. Seismic risk is moderate in the foothill and pre-Alpine belt: the province of Belluno, the Verona area (1117 earthquake), the Vicenza area and northern Treviso (Asolo 1695) fall in zone 2, the plain in zones 3 and 4.
