Statute and languages
Veneto is an ordinary-statute region; in the 2017 consultative referendum over 98% of voters asked for greater autonomy and the Region is negotiating the implementation of differentiated autonomy with the State. The official language is Italian. Law 482/1999 protects Ladin in the Dolomite municipalities of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Livinallongo del Col di Lana and Colle Santa Lucia (and in other Agordino and Cadore municipalities that declared themselves Ladin), Cimbrian (an old German dialect) in the Sette Comuni of Vicenza and in Giazza, and Friulian in the Portogruaro area. Regional law 8/2007 recognises Venetian as cultural heritage, without national minority-language status.
Holidays
25 April is also St Mark's day in Venice (a rosebud, the bòcolo, is given as a gift); St Anthony, 13 June, stops Padua; St Zeno, 21 May, is Verona's patron. The Venice Carnival (February) and the Festa del Redentore (third Sunday in July) are the best-known city events.
