Costs: a mid-sized city with mid-range prices
Ancona's cost of living is in line with the mid-sized capitals of central Italy: rents lower than Bologna or Florence, average grocery costs, cheap urban transport. The priciest zones are the centre, viale della Vittoria and the Passetto; the most affordable are the southern and western districts and the towns of the urban area.

What costs more
The historic centre, viale della Vittoria, the Passetto and the Pincio area have the highest rents and sale prices, driven by proximity to the sea and the scarcity of renovated flats. Sea-view homes at Portonovo and on the Conero are a market of their own. In summer, restaurants and accommodation along the Conero Riviera rise in price with the tourist season.
What costs less
Conerobus urban transport has a moderate monthly pass (see data) and the city can be covered on foot or by bike in the flat areas. Grocery shopping at the Mercato delle Erbe and in supermarkets is around the national average; fish at the fish market and the port stalls is cheaper than in inland cities. The free beaches of the Passetto and Mezzavalle cost nothing.

Cheaper zones
The districts of Piano San Lazzaro, Grazie, Brecce Bianche and Posatora, and the Torrette area near the hospital and the medical faculty, have lower rents and good bus links. In the urban area, Falconara Marittima and Osimo offer lower prices with frequent trains and buses to Ancona.
Tourist tax
The Comune di Ancona applies a tourist tax per person per night in accommodation, with rates by category published on the municipal website.
