Ancona

Capital of the Marche region, Ancona is a city of about one hundred thousand people built on a promontory between the port and Monte Conero. A passenger and freight port among the Adriatic's busiest, shipbuilding, a technical-scientific university and the regional hospital. A compact, mid-sized city with the sea in town and a moderate cost of living.

Overview

Size and role

Ancona is the capital of the Marche region and of a province that is not a metropolitan city: it has about one hundred thousand residents and an urban area that includes Falconara Marittima, Osimo, Jesi and the coast south to the Conero. The city grew around its natural, elbow-shaped harbour (hence the Greek name) and spread over the surrounding hills: the historic centre on the Guasco hill with the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, the nineteenth and twentieth-century town towards the Passetto and viale della Vittoria, residential and working-class districts to the south and west (Piano, Brecce Bianche, Posatora, Torrette with the regional hospital).

It is a mid-scale city: you cross it by bus in twenty minutes, much can be done on foot and the sea is inside the city, at the Passetto and Portonovo.

Economy, study, who it suits

The economy revolves around the port (ferries to Greece, Croatia and Albania, cruises, freight, fishing), Fincantieri shipbuilding and the boating industry, regional public administration, the Torrette regional hospital and the Marche Polytechnic University, with faculties of engineering, medicine, economics, agriculture and sciences. The Marche's manufacturing industry (mechanics, household appliances, footwear) lies in the province and the valleys.

Ancona suits those who want a human-scale city with sea, hills and regional services, students of technical and medical disciplines and people working in the public sector or port logistics. It suits less well anyone looking for intense nightlife, a large labour market or frequent air connections.

Seasons

The climate is Adriatic: hot but breezy summers, cool damp winters with bora episodes and occasional snow, pleasant shoulder seasons. The best period runs from May to September, when the sea is enjoyed at the Passetto and the Conero beaches; July and August bring ferry traffic and tourists heading for the Conero Riviera.

Living

  • Cost of living

Ancona's cost of living is in line with the mid-sized capitals of central Italy: rents lower than Bologna or Florence, average grocery costs, cheap urban transport. The priciest zones are the centre, viale della Vittoria and the Passetto; the most affordable are the southern and western districts and the towns of the urban area.

  • Housing

The historic centre and viale della Vittoria are the most sought-after zones; Piano and Grazie the working-class, multi-ethnic ones; Torrette and Brecce Bianche serve the hospital and university; Posatora and the north-west require attention to the landslide area. Public housing through ERAP Marche and the Comune; student housing through ERDIS.

  • Daily life

Registry and municipal services are at the town hall and online with SPID/CIE. AnconAmbiente manages waste collection, with door-to-door service in most of the city. Water is managed by Viva Servizi and is drinkable. Shopping happens at the Mercato delle Erbe, the Piano market and supermarkets; the Benincasa municipal library is in the centre.

Discovering

  • Identity

Ancona is the capital of the Marche region and of the Province of Ancona, seat of the regional offices and the Prefecture. The patron saint is San Ciriaco, city holiday on 4 May with its fair. The Ancona dialect is a transitional speech between Gallo-Italic and central varieties. The port, founded by Greeks from Syracuse, is the historic core of the city.

  • Climate & environment

Temperate Adriatic-coast climate: hot breezy summers, damp winters with bora winds and occasional snow, rain spread through the year with autumn peaks. Hydrogeological risk is the local issue: the landslide of 13 December 1982 involved a whole strip of the city to the north-west (Posatora, Borghetto) and is now monitored by a municipal early-warning system.
