Working in Aosta

An economy dominated by the regional public sector (administration, health, schools), with trade, services, tourism and a steelworks. Regional unemployment is among the lowest in Italy but the market is small and seasonal. French is required in regional public competitions.

Sectors

The autonomous Region, with its extensive powers, is by far the town's main employer: regional and municipal administration, the health authority with the Parini hospital, schools and university, regional agencies (Finaosta, CVA for hydroelectric power). Trade and personal services serve the whole Valley, which converges on Aosta for offices, shops and healthcare.

Tourism provides jobs mostly in the valleys, but in Aosta it feeds hotels, restaurants and services; seasonality (winter and July–August) is strong. Industry is represented by Cogne Acciai Speciali (special steels, among the largest private employers) and small craft and construction firms. The Chambre valdôtaine publishes annual economic and statistical reports on the regional economy.

Job hunting

The main channel is regional and municipal public competitions, which require passing a French language test; calls are on the Region's portal. The Aosta employment centre and the regional labour agency publish private vacancies; tourism seasonal jobs go through consortia and regional portals.

The employment and unemployment rates shown below are regional: Valle d'Aosta is consistently among the regions with the lowest unemployment, but the absolute number of jobs is limited and commuting to Turin and Switzerland is common. Coworking spaces are few and small, concentrated in the centre; the regional incubator Pépinière d'entreprises hosts startups and innovative firms in Aosta and Pont-Saint-Martin.
