Overview
In short
Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, seat of the Council and the Executive of the Autonomous Region, and the centre of an urban area which with Quartu Sant'Elena, Quartucciu, Selargius, Monserrato, Elmas and Assemini has twice the municipality's population. The city sits on limestone hills between the Gulf of Angels and two lagoons, Santa Gilla to the west and Molentargius to the east: the Castello district on top, Marina, Stampace and Villanova at its feet, the twentieth-century districts inland and, beyond the salt pans, the long Poetto beach.
The economy is service-based: Region, Comune, state offices, health care (Brotzu hospital, Monserrato Policlinico), university, retail, port (ferries, cruises, canal port), tourism; around it gravitate the Sarroch refinery, the ICT hub with Tiscali and the CRS4 research centre at Pula.
- Castello: the medieval upper district, Pisan towers, cathedral, museums; quiet, few cars, stairs.
- Marina: between the port and Via Roma, alleys, restaurants, B&Bs; the most touristy.
- Stampace and Villanova: historic districts at the foot of Castello, workshops and coloured houses; Villanova the most sought after.
- San Benedetto, Fonsarda, Genneruxi, Bonaria: central twentieth-century residential areas, market, services.
- Poetto, Quartiere del Sole, Sant'Elia: the sea; holidays in summer, quiet in winter.
- Is Mirrionis, San Michele, Sant'Avendrace: working-class, public housing, university at Sa Duchessa.
- Pirri: former municipality merged in 1928, with its own Municipalità; lower prices, village life.
- Monserrato, Quartu, Selargius, Quartucciu, Elmas: hinterland, university Cittadella, lower prices, metro-tram and CTM.
Who it suits and who it does not
It suits those working in the public sector, services, ICT or tourism, students at the University of Cagliari and anyone wanting to live by the sea all year in an orderly, safe city with a good climate. It suits less those who need to travel often to the mainland (every trip is a flight or a night on a ship), those looking for a large private job market, and anyone who suffers the wind: the Mistral is frequent and strong.
Seasons and connections
Mild sunny winters, hot but breezy summers; the Mistral cools and disturbs. Cagliari-Elmas airport is 7 km away, with a railway station linked to the centre in a few minutes; flights to Rome and Milan fall under Sardinia's territorial continuity scheme. From the port, in front of Via Roma, ferries to Civitavecchia, Naples, Palermo and Arbatax. Trains and ARST coaches link the rest of the island; northern Sardinia takes three hours.
