Neighbourhoods by profile
Murat centre: corso Vittorio Emanuele, via Roma, piazza Prefettura, the public gardens; nineteenth and early twentieth-century buildings, offices, shops and bars; the zone most sought after by employees and professionals, where everything is done on foot. Old town: below the Monforte Castle, alleys and stairways, stone houses at very low prices, many empty or needing renovation, some recovered as homes and B&Bs; atmospheric but with limited accessibility and few services.
Vazzieri: to the south-west, around the University of Molise campus, with student residences, shared flats and supermarkets; the city's young zone. San Giovanni, Colle dell'Orso, Cappuccini, Tappino: 1970s–1990s residential districts with large flats, schools, parking and the Cardarelli hospital at Tappino; the typical family choice. Contrade and hamlets (Santo Stefano, Mascione and the rural contrade): houses with land, car indispensable.

Market
The housing market is shaped by population decline: supply is wide, selling times long and prices among the lowest of the provincial capitals. For tenants this means bargaining power and long contracts easy to obtain; short-term rentals are few and concentrated in the old town. Many 1960s–1970s buildings have a low energy class: with the local winters, check the energy certificate and the type of heating before signing.
Public housing and student housing
Public residential housing is managed by the IACP of the province of Campobasso (the public housing institute) and by the Comune, which publishes allocation calls with residence and income requirements and rent subsidies. ESU Molise (the agency for the right to university study) allocates beds in Campobasso's university residences, grants and canteen access through an annual call by ISEE and merit. The private room market is concentrated in Vazzieri and the centre.
