Overview
Size and role
Campobasso is the capital of the Molise region and of the province of the same name. With fewer than fifty thousand residents it is, after Aosta, Italy's least populous regional capital, and Molise is the second smallest region. The city sits at about 700 m on a hill in the Sannio area, halfway between the Adriatic (Termoli, an hour away) and the Apennines; Rome and Naples are about two and a half to three hours away. It is a city where everything is reachable on foot or in a few minutes by car and where regional services — Region, health authority, university, courthouse — weigh heavily on the economy and daily life.
Zones at a glance
The old town climbs the hill to the Monforte Castle, with alleys, stairways and the churches of San Bartolomeo, San Giorgio and San Leonardo: it is the historic part, partly regenerated, partly depopulated. The nineteenth-century Murat town is the real centre: corso Vittorio Emanuele, piazza Vittorio Emanuele ("piazza Prefettura"), via Roma, the public gardens, the office buildings. The twentieth-century districts spread north and south (San Giovanni, Vazzieri with the university, Colle dell'Orso, Cappuccini, Tappino with the hospital), and along the roads towards Bojano and Termoli lie the industrial and commercial zones.
Economy, study, who it suits
The economy is based on public administration (Region, Province, Comune, Prefecture, regional health authority, courthouse), services and retail, and agri-food: the La Molisana pasta maker has its historic plant here and the province produces wheat, oil, dairy and truffles. The University of Molise, headquartered in the city, is the main driver of the young population.
Campobasso suits people working in the public sector or at the university, those looking for a small, safe, low-cost city with nature nearby, and students from Molise and neighbouring regions. It suits less well anyone who depends on fast trains and airports, or who seeks a large private labour market or nightlife: the city is quiet and shrinking demographically.
Seasons
The climate is that of high hills: cold winters with frequent snow, summers hot by day and cool in the evening, many sunny days. From May to October the city and its surroundings (Matese, drove roads, Termoli) are at their best; Corpus Domini, with the Procession of the Misteri, and the feast of San Giorgio on 23 April are the moments of greatest participation.

- Cost of living
Campobasso has rents, house prices and restaurant prices among the lowest of Italy's regional capitals. Heating, for the long winter, and the car, needed to move outside the city, weigh more. The Murat centre is the most sought-after zone; the old town and the outer districts are the cheapest.
