Semiconductors

The STMicroelectronics site in Catania includes front-end manufacturing, electrical wafer sort (EWS), research and development, labs and product design; the company describes it as one of the world's largest centres for the development of power and smart-power semiconductors, with 5,500 employees. It works on silicon carbide (SiC), used in vehicle and industrial electrification and renewables; in May 2024 ST announced a "SiC Campus" in Catania that will bring all production steps onto one site.

Solar

3Sun, an Enel Green Power company, makes solar modules in Catania. In February 2023 Enel announced financing to raise capacity from 200 MW to 3 GW a year, with full operation expected by July 2024 and about a thousand direct and indirect jobs expected; these are targets stated by the company, to be checked against later updates.

Research

Among research institutions, the INGV Etna Observatory runs the seismic, geochemical, geodetic and satellite monitoring networks for Etna, the Aeolian Islands and Pantelleria and carries out research and training.
