Administrative structure
According to the municipal Statute the territory comprises the main town, the neighbourhoods (quartieri) and the outlying villages (frazioni). Neighbourhood committees have informative, consultative, propositional and participatory functions and are the administration's main interlocutors in planning choices; territorial committees, elected indirectly, coordinate neighbouring quartieri. The Comune's banner (gonfalone) bears the silver medal for military valour for the war of liberation.
The patroness
The feast of the Madonna del Fuoco, the city's patroness, on 4 February, is Forlì's oldest. It recalls the 1428 fire in the house of the schoolmaster Lombardino da Ripapetrosa, in which only a woodcut of the Virgin survived. On the night of 3–4 February balconies and windows are lit with candles and small lights; the typical treat is the piadina della Madonna, an oval sweet bread flavoured with anise; stalls fill the streets between piazza del Duomo and piazza Saffi.
