Cost of living: affordable housing, big gaps between districts

Rents and house prices lower than Milan, Bologna and Florence, with a sharp gap between Levante and Ponente; public transport with free evening and Sunday travel for residents holding a CityPass; groceries and dining at northern-Italian averages.

Housing

Genoa is, with Trieste, the most affordable northern capital for housing: the building stock is vast and the population has been falling for decades. The internal gap is marked, however: Albaro, Carignano, Castelletto, Nervi and Quinto have big-city prices, while the old town (especially the western part towards Prè and the Maddalena), Sampierdarena, Cornigliano and the Valpolcevera offer much lower rents. Many buildings have no lift, or a lift that requires payment.

Transport, groceries, car

The AMT monthly and annual pass covers buses, metro, funiculars and lifts; since November 2025 residents of the Metropolitan City with a CityPass travel free at night and on Sundays, resident under-14s always, while over-70s pay a reduced annual pass unless their ISEE income is low. Groceries and utilities are at northern averages; focaccia and farinata remain meals for a few euros, while restaurants in Boccadasse and the Porto Antico charge tourist prices. A car is expensive: parking is scarce, and the paid Blu Area covers almost the whole centre.

Typical choices

Students rent rooms in the old town, Castelletto or San Martino (near the hospital and medical faculties) and in ALiSEO residences; people working at the port or Erzelli often choose Sestri Ponente, Sampierdarena or Cornigliano, linked by train and bus; families prefer Marassi, San Fruttuoso, Albaro and the Levante.
